How to get the waypoints
The waypoints are free, but are not public domain. They are available only to owners of the book "The Lycian Way" by Kate Clow and Terry Richardson, and are provided only for your own use; they must not be distributed further. If you don't
have a copy, get one now!
To get the waypoints, send a mail to david.q.carter@gmail.com
(change the "q" to "m"). You need to prove you
have the book by quoting the word after "between" in the first
sentence of the introduction of the book: (page 15 in the 2005 English
edition): "Turkey is a land of contrasts between ....". (Or the equivalent
from the German translation).
I will then send you a zip file containing data for the west and east parts of the route. They are in several different formats:
- GDB. This is Garmin's proprietary format. If you have a Garmin GPS with
MapSource software (and a cable to connect it to your computer) you should
use this format.
- TXT. Plain text format. If you have a
non-Garmin or a Garmin without MapSource, you can try converting either the
TXT files or the GDB files. I cannot help you with this, beyond pointing you to GPSBabel, where you can convert GDB to many other formats. I'm told for example that converting GDB to GPX XML and then handing that to
EasyGPS will work for non-MapSource Garmins (thanks to Geoffrey Pearce for this information). I would try GPSBabel and EasyGPS whatever kind of GPS you have.
- PDF. Portable Document Format. The low-tech solution: if you don't manage
to get the points into your GPS, you can at least print them out and take
them with you.
- I have a variety of other formats for the west part of the route only.
KML, GPX, MPS, DXF. Most of these have been contributed by other walkers.
Some of the files are big, and may not be as up to date as the GDB, TXT and PDF versions. I will send them on request. If you succeed in converting to a format that works for your GPS, please send me a copy. Future walkers will be grateful to you!
